Ensemble Unitedberlin, National Quartet of Ukraine, Meta-X Ensemble
The issue of “transition” has played a special role in Mashayekhi's thinking and music, so much so that it becomes the main theme of his 9th symphony titled “My World.” Here, and in other works such as East-West, Op. 45 and Direction East, Op. 92, Mashayekhi has a direct reference to “origin and destination.” In Tehran-Berlin 2019, his two favorite cities are symbolically located in the arena of Iranian-European dialogue. In this work, we have a texture of Iranian modality, European tonality and thematic expressions. Here, the role of the Trumpet is reminiscent of the sound of Ta'zieh—a kind of street theatre—which the composer remembers from his childhood.
